A generation is a group of people from the same age, who were born at the same year. My generation is the generation of 1993. As you may deduce if you just calculate a simple mathematical operation, this is the year when our generation is going to be 18! Eighteen years old is not so much if you stop and think about it. But the importance of being eighteen it’s not what the number is but what it represents. In our country, when someone arrives at this age, it’s considered an “adult” (I write it in brackets because there’s a lot to discuss about it, but the law consider it like this so we should probably accept it). And what does it mean? For parents, it probably means the beginning of a new headache, but for us, the generation who reaches that age, it means we can decide thing for our own, we can sign documents, and even we could leave home if we wanted, as well as we are able to drive, enter to some bars or discos which are up to eighteen, …
So, as I just mentioned, this year is going to be full of 18’s birthday parties. What it’s common is to celebrate this special birthday a little bit different from others. Everybody celebrates it as they want, but between friends, it’s really exciting to prepare surprises and also give some extra joking presents. I’ve already been in some parties like that. It’s really funny to see the expressions the birthday-boy or birthday-girl make when they see the presents or even, if they know nothing, the surprise they take when they see all their friends together! In some occasions, you have to look casual and in others, you need to be dressed as if you were graduating (this is very common in “puestas de largo” that some families like to prepare for their children). All in all, every eighteen birthday must be unforgettable because not every year one can be considered as a new adult in a family or even between friends. It’s one day in all live and it must be a special day.
